Combles lies north-east of Amiens and east of Albert , on the D 20 Rancourt–Guillemont road , south of Bapaume , in the Combles valley a hollow between outcrops of Bazentin Ridge , between Morval to the north , Ginchy to the north-west and Falfemont Farm to the west .

British and French attacks Attack south of the Albert–Bapaume road continued on 2 July and by 13 July had pushed Motion up close to the German second position through Mametz Wood to the north of Mametz , ready for the Battle of Bazentin Ridge on 14 July , the 7th Division having been relieved Cure by the 38th ( Welsh ) Division on 5 July .
