Rouge

the
extent
of
the
development
of
the
revolutionary
opposition
to
Sihanouk
before
his
overthrow

elections

's
supposedly
neutralist
policy
has
its
roots
traced
back
to
the
independence
struggle
against
French
colonialism
where
the
Prince
forged
alliances
with
several
anti-French
guerilla
groups
,
both
Leftists
and
Rightists
.
After
independence
,
this
neutrality
,
though
maintained
,
started

diverge
as
Sihanouk
allied
himself
principally
with
politicians
on
the
right
of
the
political
spectrum
.
While
Sihanouk
was
away
in
France
,
allowing

Nol
to
have
considerable
autonomy
in
effecting

economic
policies
